Why English teaching is important Tsunami deaths and school needs affect children and adults |
Without volunteer English teachers, most children would not have the chance to speak to a native English speaker. Thai English teachers work hard to make their students proficient but we can add greatly to their effectiveness with regular classes and intensive two-day visits to schools. If the children can master English, their futures are far more promising in this fast-changing country. The areas affected by the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami suffered a death toll of four in five of Thai English-speakers and the economy is still recovering. There is a desperate need for English for people to communicate with tourists - one of the main industries which is starting to grow again. Everyone, from taxi drivers And whole communities in poorer regions and sections of the population need English lessons to help them find prosperity. These include fishing villages on the edge of Phang-Nga Bay and Burmese refugees trying to integrate with Thai society.
